How to Restring an Acoustic Guitar
A slow, careful twenty minutes that will make your guitar sound new again
Fresh strings are the cheapest and most dramatic upgrade available to any guitarist. A set costs less than a coffee and a sandwich, and it will do more for your tone than most pedals, most pickups, and nearly every accessory you have ever been sold. Yet restringing is the job players most often put off — usually because somewhere along the line they were told it is fiddly, or risky, or best left to a shop. It isn't. It takes about twenty minutes the first time and closer to ten once you have done it twice.
This guide covers steel-string acoustic guitars with bridge pins — the most common design by far. If you play a classical or flamenco guitar with a tie block and nylon strings, the process is genuinely different, and we cover that at the end.
What You'll Need
- A fresh set of strings — matched to your guitar and playing style. Light gauge (.012–.053) suits most acoustics; mediums (.013–.056) give more volume and low end but need more finger strength, and not every guitar is built for the extra tension.
- A string winder — not essential, but it turns the most tedious part of the job into a few seconds. The common three-in-one tools combine a winder, a cutter and a notch for pulling bridge pins.
- Wire cutters — for trimming the ends. Do not use scissors or nail clippers; steel strings will ruin them.
- A tuner — clip-on, pedal or phone app.
- A soft cloth — plus, optionally, fretboard oil or lemon oil if your board is rosewood or ebony and looking dry.
- Somewhere stable to work — a table with a folded towel, or a neck rest if you have one. Working with the guitar on your lap is possible but makes the bridge awkward to reach.
First: One at a Time, or All at Once?
You will find strong opinions on both sides of this. Here is the practical answer.
Removing all six strings at once will not damage a healthy guitar. The neck is under roughly 70 to 90 kilos of tension when strung, and releasing it for ten minutes does nothing that a truss rod cannot handle. Guitars sit unstrung in workshops for weeks.
That said, changing one string at a time keeps the neck at roughly constant tension, which means the instrument settles faster and stays closer to its previous setup. It is also the safer habit if your guitar is old, has a known neck issue, or has a floating bridge or moveable saddle.
The one time to take everything off is when you want to clean the fretboard properly — and if you are already restringing, you should.
Step 1: Loosen and Remove the Old Strings
Slacken each string by turning its tuning peg until the string goes completely limp. A winder makes short work of this. Do not simply cut a string at full tension: it will whip, it can scratch the top, and the sudden release is unkind to the neck.
Once every string is slack, you can cut them near the soundhole to make them easier to handle, then unwind the loose ends from the tuning posts. Coil the old strings up tightly before you bin them — loose steel strings in a rubbish bag are a genuine hazard.
Step 2: Pull the Bridge Pins
Each string is held at the bridge by a small tapered pin. These can be stubborn, and this is the step where most damage happens, so take it gently.
Use the notch on a string winder, or a proper bridge pin puller, and lever the pin straight up with the tool resting against the bridge — not against the soundboard. If a pin is really stuck, reach inside the soundhole and push it up from below with a thumb. That always works and cannot mark anything.
Never lever a bridge pin out with a screwdriver, a coin or a knife. The bridge is a thin piece of hardwood glued to a spruce or cedar top, and the dents you make there are permanent.
Keep the pins somewhere they cannot roll away. They are easy to lose and annoying to match if you do.
Step 3: Clean While You Can
An unstrung guitar is the only time you get proper access to the fretboard, so use it.
Wipe the board with a dry cloth first. Built-up grime along the fret edges will come away with a little gentle scraping using a plastic pick or your thumbnail. If the board is unfinished rosewood or ebony and looks pale and dry, a small amount of fretboard oil on a cloth will feed it — apply sparingly, leave a minute, wipe off the excess. Maple boards are usually finished and need nothing more than a wipe.
Take a cloth to the body, around the bridge, and along the headstock while you are there. Ninety seconds of work that makes the whole instrument feel different in the hand.
Step 4: Seat the New String at the Bridge
This is the step people get subtly wrong, and it is the reason bridge pins pop out mid-song.
Drop the ball end of the new string into the bridge hole, pushing it a few centimetres down into the body. Then insert the bridge pin with its groove facing forward, toward the neck — the string sits in that groove as it exits.
Now the important part: while pressing the pin down with one hand, gently pull the string upward with the other until you feel it stop. What you are doing is pulling the ball end up against the bridge plate inside the guitar so that the bridge plate holds the string, not the pin. The pin is only a wedge that keeps it there. Get this right and the pin will never move; get it wrong and the string will pull the pin out under tension.
The pin should sit snugly with its head just above the bridge. Do not hammer it. If it stands proud, the ball end is probably not seated — back it out and try again.
Step 5: Thread and Lock at the Tuner
Pull the string up the neck to its tuning post, keeping it in the correct nut slot. Thread it through the hole in the post, leaving slack — roughly two to three finger-widths of give between the string and the fretboard at the twelfth fret. Too little slack and you will get one wrap; too much and you will get a messy pile.
Before winding, put a lock in the string. Bring the loose end around the post, pass it over the main length of string on the first pass and under on the way back, then pinch the two together. This simple crossover grips the post and stops the string from slipping, which is the single biggest cause of a guitar that will not hold pitch after a change.
Step 6: Wind
Turn the tuner so that the string winds onto the post and the wraps travel downward, toward the face of the headstock. This matters: wraps that stack downward increase the string's break angle over the nut, which improves tone, sustain and tuning stability. Wraps that climb upward do the opposite.
Keep light tension on the string with your free hand as you wind, and guide the wraps so they sit side by side rather than crossing over one another. Aim for two to three wraps on the wound strings and three to four on the plain ones. More than that is not a safety margin; it is just slippage waiting to happen.
Bring the string up to roughly the right pitch, then move on to the next one. Do not tune precisely yet — every string you add changes the tension on the ones already fitted.
Step 7: Stretch the Strings
New strings stretch. If you skip this step, your guitar will drift flat for the next two days and you will blame the strings.
Take each string between thumb and forefinger and pull it gently away from the fretboard — about a centimetre is plenty — working your way along its length from the nut to the bridge. You will hear the pitch drop immediately. Retune, and repeat. Three or four passes per string is usually enough; you know you are done when the pitch stops dropping after a stretch.
Be firm but not violent. You are settling the windings and pulling slack out of the wraps, not testing the string's breaking point.
Step 8: Tune, Trim, and Tune Again
Tune the guitar properly, then go around all six strings a second and third time. Because the strings share tension through the neck and top, the first pass is always approximate.
Finally, trim the excess at the headstock with wire cutters, leaving five millimetres or so. Long ends look untidy, snag on cases and clothing, and are surprisingly good at drawing blood. Some players prefer to curl the ends neatly with pliers instead of cutting them — either is fine.
Give the guitar an hour, then check the tuning once more. It will have moved a little. That is normal and it will settle within a day or two.
Common Mistakes
- Not seating the ball end. The most common fault by far, and the cause of pins that fire out under tension.
- Levering pins with a screwdriver. Permanent dents in the bridge and top. Use a puller or push from inside.
- Winding upward on the post. Reduces break angle over the nut and costs you tone and stability.
- Too many wraps. Overlapping coils bind and slip, and the string goes out of tune every time you bend.
- Kinking the string. A sharp bend creates a weak point. If you put a real kink in a string while fitting it, that string will break there eventually.
- Cutting to length before winding. Wind first, trim last. Always.
- Skipping the stretch. Ten seconds per string now, or two days of flat tuning later.
How Often Should You Change Strings?
There is no universal schedule, because it depends far more on the player than the calendar. Sweat chemistry varies enormously between individuals, and one guitarist's strings will die in a fortnight while another's stay bright for months.
Change them when you notice any of these:
- The tone has gone dull and the sustain shorter
- The guitar will not stay in tune, or intonates poorly up the neck
- The wound strings look discoloured, or feel gritty under the fingers
- You can see grime packed into the windings
- You have a recording, a gig or a lesson in the next few days — change a week beforehand so they are settled but still fresh
As a rough guide: monthly for a heavy player, every two to three months for regular practice, and by feel for occasional playing. Wiping the strings down with a dry cloth after every session costs nothing and will meaningfully extend their life.
A Note for Classical and Flamenco Guitarists
If your guitar has nylon strings, almost none of the above applies at the bridge. There are no bridge pins; the strings are tied to a slotted tie block, which is a different technique entirely and worth learning properly.
Two things to know in the meantime. First, nylon stretches far more than steel — expect a new classical set to need retuning repeatedly over several days, not several hours, and be patient with it. Second, never fit steel strings to a guitar built for nylon. The tension is roughly double what the top and neck were designed to carry, and the damage is not theoretical.

None of this is difficult, and doing it yourself is worth more than the twenty minutes it costs. A player who restrings their own guitar starts to notice things — a pin that no longer grips, a nut slot cut too deep, a fret that is wearing faster than the others. That familiarity is how you learn what your instrument is actually doing, and it begins with a job that anyone can do on a kitchen table with a cloth and a pair of cutters.
