A cutaway is one of the more visible design choices on a guitar, and one of the easier ones to weigh up once you know what it's actually trading away. It's a curved notch cut into the body where the upper bout meets the neck, and its whole purpose is to give the fretting hand a clear path to the frets that would otherwise be buried inside the body. That's the entire benefit — everything else about a cutaway is a trade-off against it.

What a cutaway actually does
On a standard, non-cutaway body, the point where the neck meets the body limits how far up the fretboard a player can comfortably reach — past roughly the 12th to 14th fret, the body itself gets in the way of the hand. A cutaway removes that obstruction by curving part of the upper body away, opening up clear access to the highest frets on the neck.
For styles that regularly use the top of the neck — lead playing, solos, and anything that ventures past the point where the neck meets the body — that access is a real, practical benefit. For rhythm playing, chord-based accompaniment, and most classical and fingerstyle repertoire, which rarely ventures that high up the neck, it's a feature that mostly goes unused.

The trade-off: body volume and tone
A cutaway isn't free. Removing part of the upper bout reduces the overall internal air volume of the body, and that volume is directly tied to how much bass response and overall resonance a guitar produces. In practice, this means a cutaway guitar will generally have a somewhat quieter, less bass-heavy voice than the same model without one, all else being equal. On some instruments the difference is subtle enough that most players wouldn't notice it in a blind comparison; on guitars where the body size and bracing were built specifically to maximise resonance, it can be more apparent.
There's also a structural side to it. Cutting away part of the body changes how the top is braced and supported near the neck joint, and a well-designed cutaway accounts for this in the build; a poorly executed one can leave a guitar feeling less structurally solid at that joint over time. This is one area where build quality genuinely matters more than the cutaway concept itself.
A cutaway isn't an upgrade or a downgrade — it's a specific trade of a small amount of resonance for a specific kind of access. Whether that trade is worth it depends entirely on whether you'll use what it gives you.

Why classical guitars almost never have one
Classical guitar repertoire rarely calls for the extreme upper-fret access a cutaway provides, and classical technique and tradition both lean toward preserving every bit of the instrument's natural resonance and volume rather than trading any of it away. Combine that with a scale and body shape that already differs from a steel-string acoustic's, and it's easy to see why cutaways stayed almost entirely a steel-string phenomenon — the classical guitar world simply never had the same demand for the trade-off a cutaway represents.

So which should you choose?
The honest test is simple: think about how often you actually play, or plan to play, past the point where the neck meets the body. If the answer is regularly — lead lines, solos, higher-register melodic playing — a cutaway earns its place and the small resonance trade-off is worth it for the access it buys. If the answer is rarely or never, which describes most rhythm players, most classical repertoire, and a great deal of fingerstyle playing, a non-cutaway body gives you the guitar's full resonant potential with nothing given up in exchange, since you were never going to use the access anyway.
There's no wrong answer here, only a mismatch between the feature and how you actually play. A cutaway sitting unused on a guitar that's only ever strummed in open position isn't hurting anything, but it also isn't helping — it's simply resonance you paid for and didn't spend.
