The single most overlooked threat to an acoustic guitar isn't a knock or a drop — it's the air around it.

Most guitar damage that ends up costing real money didn't come from an accident. It came from months of sitting in a room that was too dry, or too damp, with nobody noticing until a crack appeared or the action quietly crept upward. Wood is hygroscopic — it constantly absorbs and releases moisture from the air around it, swelling when it's humid and shrinking when it's dry — and a guitar's top is thin enough, and under enough string tension, that those small movements can genuinely damage it. The good news is that protecting against it is simple, cheap, and takes a few minutes a month once it's part of your routine.

The target range
Luthiers and manufacturers converge on the same number: aim for roughly 45–55% relative humidity. Most guitars will tolerate a somewhat wider band without immediate harm, but that middle range is where the wood stays stable and the risk of damage drops close to zero. Temperature matters too, though less critically — a comfortable everyday room temperature, roughly 60–80°F (15–27°C), is generally fine, and it's really rapid swings and extremes that cause trouble rather than a slightly warm or cool room on its own.
The only way to actually know what your guitar is experiencing is to measure it. A small digital hygrometer, kept in the case or the room where the guitar lives, costs very little and removes all the guesswork — humidity isn't something you can reliably judge just by how the air feels.
What goes wrong when it's too dry
Dry air is the more common and more damaging problem, especially through winter, when indoor heating quietly drags a room's humidity well below what feels obviously "dry" to a person standing in it. As the wood loses moisture, it shrinks, and a guitar's top — under constant pull from the strings — has nowhere for that shrinkage to go but into visible damage:
- Cracks in the top or back, often running with the grain, as the wood contracts more than it can handle.
- A sunken or flattened top, losing its natural slight dome and, with it, some of its tone.
- Sharp fret ends that suddenly feel prickly at the edge of the neck, as the fretboard wood shrinks slightly while the metal frets don't.
- Loose or lifting braces, as the glue joints inside the guitar come under stress they weren't built for.
- A thinner, brittle-sounding tone, even before any visible damage appears.
What goes wrong when it's too humid
Excess humidity is less common but not harmless — it just tends to announce itself differently. Instead of cracking, an over-humidified guitar typically swells:
- A swollen, puffy-looking top, sometimes visibly domed more than it should be.
- Rising action, as the top swells and pushes the bridge and saddle upward, making the strings noticeably harder to press.
- A dull, flat, lifeless tone, as the extra moisture adds weight to the wood and damps its ability to vibrate freely.
- Glue joints failing or the finish lifting, in more severe or prolonged cases.
Think of the top like a drumhead. Its whole job is to vibrate freely. Too dry and it shrinks and cracks; too humid and it swells and goes dead. Either way, the guitar stops doing what it's built to do.

Keeping it in range

A case humidifier — a small device that sits inside the case and slowly releases moisture — is the simplest, cheapest fix for the dry-air problem most players actually face, and it's worth having even if you don't think you need it yet; by the time symptoms are visible, some of the damage has already happened. Keeping the guitar in its case whenever it's not being played matters more than people expect, too: an open case or a guitar left out on a stand is directly exposed to whatever the room is doing, while a closed case creates a small, much more stable pocket of air around the instrument.
One habit worth specifically avoiding: storing a guitar on a wall hanger, especially on an exterior wall. Exterior walls run cooler and experience bigger humidity swings than interior ones, and a guitar hanging in the open air gets none of the buffering a case provides.

Travel and flying
Trips are when guitars are most vulnerable, because they're moving through the widest swings in a single day — a heated car, a cold cargo hold, a dry airport, a humid destination. A sturdy case is the first line of defence, and a hard case is meaningfully more protective than a gig bag if you're travelling any real distance. A few minutes spent checking the case humidifier and confirming conditions before a trip is a small habit that can prevent a genuinely heartbreaking crack.
Spotting trouble early
Get in the habit of a quick monthly glance: check the seams where the top meets the sides, look along the bridge for any sign of lifting, run a finger along the fret ends to feel for sharpness, and take a moment to notice if the action feels different than it did last month. Caught early, most humidity-related issues are minor and often self-correct once the guitar is back in a stable environment. Left unnoticed for months, the same issues can turn into an expensive repair — a cracked top, a bridge that's pulled loose, or a neck that needs proper attention from a luthier to set right.
If you do see a genuine crack, a loose brace, or a visibly warped neck, that's the point to stop experimenting and take the guitar to a qualified luthier rather than trying to fix it yourself. But the entire goal of paying attention to humidity in the first place is to make that visit unnecessary.
